Philosophy

Before a place becomes a destination.
Before a trail becomes a checklist.

Before an experience becomes a package.

There is a brief moment when a place is still itself. We find those moments and build journeys around them.

Step 1

Solo scouting

Every journey begins with our founder going alone — walking the trails, staying in the homes, testing the routes firsthand.

Step 2

Pilot trip

If a place passes the bar, we run a pilot with 3–4 hand-picked travelers. We test everything: logistics, pacing, local partnerships.

Step 3

Full journey

Only after the pilot succeeds do we open applications. Small groups. One or two departures. Then we move on to the next place.

Application-based. We don't sell seats. We review every application to ensure the right fit for you and the place.

Transparent pricing. New destinations cost more because they require weeks of scouting. We explain every rupee.

Small groups. Capped at 8–12 people. No buses. No megaphones. Just a shared experience with people who applied to be here.

Before the mainstream. We find places before they appear on travel blogs and Instagram reels. That's the entire point.

Custom Journeys

Have something specific in mind?

Whether it's a private trek for two, a slow travel honeymoon, or a bespoke itinerary for your family, we'll design it from scratch.

Why Before Maps

This is not a travel agency.

Personally Scouted

Every route, homestay, and trail is walked by our founder before it becomes a journey. No secondhand research.

Pilot-Tested

Before any journey opens to the public, we run a pilot trip with 3–4 travelers. If it doesn't pass, we don't launch it.

Before the Mainstream

We find places before they appear on travel blogs and Instagram reels. That's the entire point.

Small, Intentional Groups

Capped at 8–12 people. No buses. No megaphones. Just a shared experience with people who applied to be here.

Application-Based

We don't sell seats. We review every application to ensure the right fit for you and for the place.

Transparent Pricing

New destinations cost more because they require weeks of solo scouting and pilot testing. Established routes are more accessible. We explain every rupee.

A note from Uddip

I scout every route myself before it becomes a journey. I walk the trails, sleep in the homestays, eat the meals, talk to the locals — and only then decide if it's worth sharing. Before Maps exists because I believe the best travel experiences are found before the crowds arrive.

This isn't a travel agency. It's an invitation to experience India the way I've experienced it — slowly, intentionally, and always off the obvious path.

From the Trail

What travelers say.

Worth every rupee. The Explorer pricing seemed steep until I understood what goes into it - months of solo scouting, relationship-building with local families, route testing. You're not paying for a trip, you're paying for someone to find the trip first.

Before Maps doesn't just take you to a place. They take you to the version of a place that most people will never see. We stayed in a hamlet with five houses. No phone signal. Just a family that had been there seven generations. That's not a tour - that's a privilege.

The scouting reports alone are worth following Before Maps. But the journey itself - descending 3,500 steps to a living root bridge, swimming in rock pools, sleeping in a village hut - was the highlight of my year. The Khasi guide was extraordinary.

Miyar Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Day 8+

Rejected the first two homestays near Urgos. Too close to the road. Found a shepherd's hut at 3,800m with a view of the entire valley. This is the campsite. Pilot trip approved for August.
